Toronto is a massive city - the biggest in Canada and among the biggest in the world. With so many people and so many businesses, it's practically guaranteed that what you want can be found somewhere in the city, whether it's a Sutton real estate agent or a vintage 1990s Garfield doll with suction cup feet. The only problem is finding it. With so many people and so many businesses, how can you sift through them all to find the one you want?
Listings
The listings, either online or in the telephone book, should always be your first stop on any local business search. Businesses know that to get customers they must get noticed, so the first thing they do is get registered in the listings. You can easily find a dental professional near your home by Googling "Mississauga dentist" or you can check the Yellow Pages under "Dentist." As long as you know the business category (i.e. plumbing, retail, dance studio) it falls under, your search should be fast and easy.
Ads
Looking at ads is something most people do unconsciously. We glance at the billboards as we drive by, flip quickly through the flyers when they arrive, and absentmindedly scan the postings on the bulletin board at the home for seniors in Brampton when we go to visit relatives. However, if you know you're in the market for a service, actively tune in when the ads come on TV. Flip to the classifieds section of the paper and check it, maybe even turn on the radio. The more you open yourself up to advertising, the more local businesses will come to your attention.
Surfing
Surfing is something most people do on waves, but it can also be done over the internet or even in conversation. If you're looking for a contemporary dance studio, visit a local dance troupe and ask. If they can't teach you, they'll probably know someone else who might. You can continue surfing people and web pages until you finally land on something that fits what you're looking for.
Chamber of Commerce
If you're really having trouble or just want the scoop on whether a particular business is on the up and up, visit the local chamber of commerce. Legitimate Toronto mortgage brokers or electricians will be registered with the agency, which can provide you with comprehensive listings in the area you're interested in.
